Luther And His Katie
|
Every churchgoer knows about Martin Luther, the rumbustuous leader of the Reformation, but few realise the influence that his wife had on his ministry.
Early in his personal reformation Luther became convinced that there was no reason why parish priests should not marry, if they preferred it, but he did not feel inclined to break his clerical oath himself.
That was until he met Catherine von Bora. Catherine was the leader of a daring breakout from a convent reserved for nuns of noble birth. At first Luther was a little afraid of her but they married two years later on the 13th June 1525.
She prolonged Luther's life by protecting him from the reckless overwork to which he subjected himself. She made the garden of the unfinished Augustine Convent that was her home, profitable - keeping pigs, cows and chickens. She took over three other gardens and planted fruit trees and started small scale farming.
She made her home a haaven of rest for the storm tossed man that was her husband. Luther once said, 'Next to God's Word, the world has no more precious treasure than holy matrimony. God's best gift is a pious, cheerful, God-fearing, wife, with whom you may live peaceefully, to whom you may entrust your goods, your body, and your life.'

This slim paperback is one of the most inspiring histories of an amazing relationship, that was so unexpected. Luther was the first ex-monk to marry an ex-nun. This book introduces us to the two characters and the unique and history making situation in which they found themselves.
The household they set up was a revolution in their day, and also in ours. Who was in charge of whom was not an issues and their love and harmony and devotion to God brought happiness and usefulness to all who lived under their roof.
There was plenty of danger, heartache, death and discouragement, but the faith of both these children of God, brought also victory, comfort and many writings that we still access today.
Katie is someone that is a torchbearer for the role of women in all walks of life and her sensitivity to others is a skill we need urgently in these apathetic and careless days. Luther highly valued her as a wife, mother, friend and confidant and longed to return home to his "beautiful Katie" on his many trips to other places. She was a business woman and organised people in the household so that it was fair for all and every person was provided for and loved. They had a large circle of friends who loved to visit and enjoy the merriment of their warm home. Singing and dancing was always high on the agenda and anything that dispelled fears and gloom.
I will not say anything more, as you need to get hold of the book for yourself. It will make your heart sing...

A small, wonderful book! I asked one of our college women to read it, she was enthralled! I, a minister in the United States, read it and had the same reaction. Many insights to Luther's life and struggles as well as Katie.
