You Can Learn to Lead
|
A manual for people in leadership.
For over 40 years Stewart Dinnen has been involved in training and motivating Leaders. As principal of two Missionary Training Colleges and International Secretary of WEC he has had plenty of hands on experience.
Here we have a masterful blend of concepts developed and shared in management letters and seminars worldwide. It is a workbook for people already in leadership and for those who may shortly have responsibility thrust on them.
Any person in a position of authority or leadership will benefit from this book.
Stewart Dinnen was International missions secretary of WEC and has over 40 years experience of training and motivating Christian leaders. He was able to observe the dramatic events that unfolded within WEC from first hand.

This book is an unusual mixture of general explanations of leadership and sections that are peculiar to WEC. This probably won’t narrow the potential readership, but does mean that two chapters are quite difficult without background knowledge. There is the frequent confusion between leadership and pastoral care; too little of the book is devoted to the two prime functions, giving direction and developing people. The style is thoroughly biblical throughout whilst perhaps attempting too much, thus proving a little superficial at times. The final section, entitled administration, sells itself short. Time management, decision making and meetings are better covered and more important than administration implies. Generally there is too much emphasis on committees rather than teams. In general, the book is worth reading for the ‘middle ranks’ of leadership and is clear, in a pleasant style. It lacks real punch and new approaches to anyone with considerable leadership experience.
CLC Book Reviews
You can Learn to Lead is the book for specialists, in the sense that it has been written for missionary leaders. Stewart Dinnen writes from over 40 years’ experience of training and motivating missionary leaders. In his time he has been principal of two missionary training colleges and international secretary of WEC (Worldwide Evangelistic Crusade). His book is a compilation of letters and papers produced by the WEC leadership over the years. Written in the style in a training manual, each chapter has a set of questions for further thought and discussion. The specialist nature of the book is indicated, for instance, by a chapter on ‘Resignation’, i.e. resignation from a missionary society. Although some of the material is applicable to a UK situation, this is not a book to be recommended for Christian leaders here in Britain. It will be a useful tool for its target audience, viz overseas missionaries.
