Christian Focus Across the Web - July 18, 2011

Gavin MacKenzie

Christian Focus Across the Web highlights important news and blog posts related to our books. This week’s highlights are below:

Review of Warfare Witness at Challies.com - Here is an excerpt from Tim's review of Warfare Witness: Contending with Spiritual Opposition in Everyday Evangelism by Stanley D. Gale.

Gale believes that an understanding of this military model provides many benefits. First, it reminds us who we are; we have been rescued and are now called to join the cause of liberation from the devil’s tyranny. Second, it reminds us of our task. To follow Christ means that we are to do what he says and to fight for his cause. Third, it speaks to motivation. We obey the Lord because we love him, are indebted to him, and owe our lives and liberty to him. Because Christ’s motivation to save us was love, we must have the same motivation as we seek out the lost. Fourth, this model reminds us why we fight and exhorts us to fight with God’s weapons in God’s ways. Fifth, it reminds us that we have a mandate and one from which we are often distracted by Satan. We are to stay true to our mission and to realize that we are not at peace but are at war.

Review of Unseen Realities at Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth - Here is an excerpt from Nick Norelli's review of Unseen Realities:  Heaven, Hell, Angels and Demons by R.C. Sproul.

One thing I greatly appreciated about the first section on heaven was that Sproul wasn’t afraid to actually talk about heaven. It seems that all the emphasis these days (in the types of books I read and in a lot of the conversations I have with the “theologically literate”) is on the new earth. If someone mentions “going to heaven” then they get scoffed at and treated as if they’re some backwoods believer who never made it out of entry level catechesis. People cackle on and on about resurrection and the new earth as if heaven is just some huge waste of time. Sproul certainly doesn’t ignore new earth and talk exclusively about heaven, nor does he refrain from commenting on the resurrection that will allow believers to enter their new earthly abode, but he’s quite right to point out that heaven, which obviously comes before the new earth, is a lot better than the earth we’re living on now, and we should rejoice that one day we’ll be there in the presence of God.
