The remarkable surgeon evangelist, Dr Bernard Palmer, has written a critical diagnosis for the church in the UK. His prognosis is that we must ‘evangelise or die’, because in so many places the church is getting older and smaller. His book is, therefore, a passionate call to action, which I found deeply inspiring and profoundly disturbing in equal measure. On every page I could hear the echo of 2 Kings 7 verse 9: ‘What we’re doing is not right. This is a day of good news and we are keeping it to ourselves.’

Read moreBernard is passionately concerned to share the good news of God’s reconciling love in Jesus. He is also devoted to encouraging other Christians to be equally committed to intentionally share the Gospel with their neighbours, friends and colleagues at work and play. This book is full of practical wisdom about how to go about being an effective witness for Christ. There are numerous personal reminiscences and illuminating stories showing us how to be effective evangelists. Those with leadership roles in the Church have special responsibilities in making the Gospel attractive and credible but, for Bernard, they don’t have a monopoly. Every Christian has a duty to make Christ, His person and His work, known as widely as possible. Bernard’s book shows us how to and is, therefore, warmly to be welcomed.
