The Father’s Love

"In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him." -1 John 4:9

Who can hear the story of Abraham preparing to offer his son Isaac and not have his heart affected? But ... If you admire Abraham offering up Isaac, how much more ought you to extol, magnify, and adore the love of God, who so loved the world as to give his only begotten Son Christ Jesus our Lord, “that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)! May we not cry out, “Now know we, O Lord, that thou hast loved us, since thou hast not withheld thy Son, your only Son, from us?” Abraham was God’s creature, and therefore under the highest obligation to surrender up Isaac. But O stupendous love! While we were his enemies, “God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law” (Gal. 4:4). O the freeness and infinity of the love of God our Father! It is unsearchable. Think, O believers, of the love of God in giving Jesus Christ to be a propitiation for our sins. And when you hear how Abraham built an altar, laid the wood in order, bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood, think how your heavenly Father bound Jesus Christ his only Son, offered him upon the altar of his justice, and laid upon him the iniquities of us all (Isa. 53:6). When you read of Abraham’s stretching forth his hand to slay his son, think of how God actually suffered his Son to be slain, that we might live for evermore.
