Encouraging Children to Think Biblically

Laura Martin

The Think Ask Bible series is a series of four books which I hope will help children and young people begin to develop an ability to think biblically about their lives. I have five children between the ages of 4 and 14, and as with all of my books, this series came about because I wanted resources for my own children to use. As parents we all have those conversations with our children, either formally in a family worship time, or informally as life happens, about things which affect them on a daily basis. Friendships that are difficult, siblings who are at times hard to love, attitudes about school or chores which are less than honouring to the Lord, opportunities to grow as after school jobs are taken on and money is earned, tensions that come through social media or a desire for more time on the latest gaming device, the heart searching questions about their place in the church and family of God, and the Christians role in the world. These are just some of the chapters covered in the series, and it’s with the desire that as each situation in life is approached, the overall question that will be asked is, “What does God’s word say about how I am to honour Jesus in this situation or scenario?”

The chapters are divided into different sections with a focus on Scripture and a drawing out of principles that apply to the different situations in life which we experience. And as the young people will see, although the Bible is sufficient for all of life, it’s not specific for all of life. For example, there are obviously no specific verses which speak to social media. But the Bible does give us principles for all situations and as we read and grow in our knowledge and understanding of God and His Word, we are able to discern these principles and apply them to life which honours Him above all.

The chapters also include study questions and an opportunity for a personal response and prayer. There is also a gospel focus through the books and an underlying assumption that not all who read them are yet saved.

My hope is that these books will be used in a variety of situations. My own older children use them in their quiet times, dividing the chapters up into two or three days. I know some families use them in their family worship and devotion times after breakfast or dinner. They could also be used in small group youth studies, homeschool devotion or Bible study times, and as resources for parents who are looking for support as they approach topics with their young people. And of course they make great gifts for Sunday School, Christian School prize giving and Homeschool end of term prizes.

There’s just one more thing to say. These books are not focused on the outward ‘doing’ which honours the Lord, instead it’s a pointing to the heart and the relationship with the Lord which is the most important thing for all of us. The outward works are things easily manipulated in young people, but pursuing their hearts for Christ is the goal we all ought to have as we put any resource in front of our children.
