About Thomas Goodwin

Thomas Goodwin (1600 - 1679), was born in Rollesby, Norfolk and was educated at Cambridge. This English Puritan theologian was a contemporary of Richard Baxter and John Owen was known as 'the Elder'. He was a Preacher of the Council of State; President of Magdalene College, Oxford; Member of the Westminster Assembly of Divines; and chaplain to Oliver Cromwell.

With clear prose set within coherent outline form, this classic treatment of prayer helps us explore one of the great mysteries and blessings of biblical faith. In what ways do the expressed desires of God’s people, disciplined in mind and heart by the word of God, have an effectual influence on the God ‘who works all things after the counsel of his own will’? Paul expressed confidence to the Corinthians that God would deliver him: ‘you also helping together in prayer for us’ (2 Cor. 1:11). Goodwin, distilled to essence by these gifted editors, opens to the reader the theology of prayer offering explanation, encouragement, admonition, warning, and assurance. One impressive aspect of this short book is its witness to how much of the Bible actually is written in the context of prayer. Though the ‘return of prayers’ is mysterious, it is no esoteric activity but at the heart of biblical revelation and the providential operations of God. This book is a sentence by sentence reminder of that great grace.
